Me and My Ride: Isuzu FXZ 1500 truck

ADAM Van Vegchel toyed with the idea of buying a truck and teaching heavy rigid open licence students for two years before he launched himself head-on into the business.

When he finally decided to make the move and invest in a truck, he had three vehicles in mind.

After making a few calls to Mitsubishi and Hino, the only viable option for Van Vegchel was to go with Isuzu, and he's now the owner of an FXZ 1500 Medium truck.

"I am the only one in Gladstone who teaches this licence, the others are in Rockhampton and Mackay," he said.

"For me I went to the three trucks I liked and after calling them the only one to ring back was Isuzu."

At 10 tonnes when full of fuel, the FXZ is not your normal vehicle to be driving around Gladstone.

With Van Vegchel teaching people who may only have a car licence, the task can be difficult, but he has had no need to replace or repair a thing in close to six months and more than 7000km of driving.

In fact, the thought has not even had to cross his mind.

"No trouble whatsoever," he said. "Off the top of my head, I have had at least 15 students."

Able to carry 15 tonnes on its six-metre tray, the truck has 10 wheels including twin-wheel dual axles and two at the front.

It is also a pleasure in the cabin, with cruise-control, climate-control and a touch-screen radio.
