Additional sixth card for Rosella race day adds excitement

CHRISTMAS is fast approaching but before the celebrations, we have one more day to worry about getting through at Ferguson Park.

That's our Rosella Park Race Day for the year, which is on Saturday.

As with every race day we hold at the Gladstone Turf Club, we are very excited - and not just because our hard-working committee gets a rest between now and Magic Millions day in January.

Having added a sixth race, we have included a lot of owners and trainers to our day - which is a positive for all. And while Tony McMahon has put forward the prospect of Adrian Coome leading the field today, I like what Shane McGovern has to offer.

But I have skipped around with my selections and being the last races of the year, I am keen to get on the score board and see if I can't bring my luck back the other way, going into 2014.

Let's start with race two and local trainer Lee Kiernan's Otango.

This, is my opinion, is the stable's best bred horse - it has won at the track, at the distance and has won with Shane McGovern aboard, as he will be on Saturday.

The only problem is that it has drawn the carpark barrier but I think it will overcome that problem.

And I will also give you a heads up into race five, while keeping my other cards well hidden... I can't reveal all my secrets!

As in previous events, I like Base Jump, which is coming back to the 1194m after running second on Melbourne Cup day at 1517m.

Despite carrying 60kg, Base Jump is a consistent runner and almost always wins prize money, so you can bet he will figure in the finish.
