Alleged toilet escape artist thinks he's Poo-dini
POLICE flushed away a man's alleged escape attempts after they busted him allegedly trying to get away through the ceiling of a Hervey Bay Hospital toilet.
Blair Clifford Edwin Rodgers had been held in custody overnight after being caught with allegedly stolen property, a stolen credit card and holding a pet snake without a licence.
The Wondunna man did not enter a plea in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court where he faced more than 20 charges including escaping lawful custody.
The court heard Rodgers was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital by police after an alleged injury.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Jeanette Grigorious said Rodgers was taken to the toilet by police who were waiting outside the door when they heard a strange noise.
"He attempted to slip through the roofing panel," she said.
During the daring escape attempt Rodgers damaged a ceiling panel.
The objection to bail tendered to the court alleged Rodgers had used a stolen credit card to make purchases from Coles, KMart and jewellery and toy stores.
The document also alluded to Rodgers' love of his pet snake.
"The defendant instructed his pregnant partner to run from police with the snake, which at first opportunity she subsequently did hiding in the nearby bushland," it reads.
Defence lawyer Trinity McGarvie said Rodgers would be contesting the charges.
Ms McGarvie said Rodgers' elderly grandmother was also willing to offer surety if bail was granted.
Magistrate Neil Lavaring declined to grant bail and said Rodgers was at risk of not appearing.
The matter will return to court on February 25.
On leaving the courtroom, Rodgers had one final request for his partner.
"Look after the kid and the snake," he said.
