Madonna biopic in the works

A BIOPIC is being developed about Madonna's life in New York City in the early 1980s as she was trying to release her debut album while navigating fame, romance and the dismissive attitude of the music industry.

Blonde Ambition will be developed by Universal who bought the rights to Elyse Hollander's screenplay about the singer's first album.

Blonde Ambition led the 2016 Black List - an annual ranking of the most-liked unproduced screenplays in Hollywood.

Michael De Luca, who produced the Fifty Shades franchise, is set to produce. Madonna broke out in 1983 with her self-titled debut album followed by 1984's blockbuster Like a Virgin.

James Packer's former film production company RatPac with buddy Brett Ratner is also attached to the Blond Ambition project.

Universal's music division are currently working on the mooted Michael Hutchence documentary helmed by the late singer's good friend Richard Lowenstein.

A raft of music biopics are in the works for the big screen with the controversial rapper Tupac Shakur to be immortalised in All Eyez On Me which is released in June.

The long-awaited Queen and Freddie Mercury film Bohemian Rhapsody will be made by X-Men director Bryan Singer and star Mr Robot actor Rami Malek as the charismatic frontman. He won the role from a number of actors who had fielded the role including Sacha Baron Cohen and Tom Hardy.

Hollywood continues to be fascinated by the music biopic despite their hit-and-miss strike rate at the box office with 2015's Straight Outta Compton proving to be one of the standouts of recent years.

Other artists getting the big screen treatment include Amy Winehouse, Roy Orbison, Elton John, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Miles Davis and Aretha Franklin.

After the success of the Never Tear Us Apart and Molly mini-series, Seven will air their take on the life of Australian sweetheart Olivia Newton-John later this year.
