Have a laugh, lose weight and quit smoking with hypnotist
MATTHEW Hale is a man of many talents, with helping people to lose weight and quit smoking just two of them.
The comedy hypnotist is bringing his tricks to Gladstone Entertainment Centre on July 24 for three shows.
Pulse got an insider's look into Matt's interesting life ahead of his performances.
Tell us about yourself. What are your hobbies and where did you grow up?
I grew up just north of London but moved to Australia 18 years ago, which gave me a late start to surfing (there's not much surf around London!), but is what I now love to do whenever and wherever I find a wave, whether at home or on tour.
How did hypnosis start for you?
I took part in a show when I was 21 and loved the experience.
However, most hypnotists back then would tell you it was a power they were born with.
I was already fascinated with how the mind works, and fortunately I was convinced it had to be more about the words you use, how you say them, body language etc. so I found a very old book on it and just started experimenting.
Eventually I made a big decision to seek out the best in the business and formally train with them to put a solid show together.
What do you enjoy about it?
I love creating a unique experience for people that they absolutely love.
The hypnosis and routines I use are designed to be tasteful, fun and make the volunteers feel fantastic.
I could never see the appeal of making people do embarrassing things.
I want anyone in the audience to be laughing and thinking "I wish I was up there" rather than "I'm glad I'm not up there!"
There's always so much laughter in the room, and I find myself laughing as much as the audience.
With the smoking seminar, how does it work?
Along with a weight loss session, I'll be running a quit-smoking session.
Specifically designed for groups, I've created a session that combines relaxation and visualisation that anyone can easily experience.
Combining this with anchoring positive feelings to the benefits of non-smoking and removing old associations to the smoking habit (i.e. automatically reaching for a cigarette without thinking about it when you have a coffee/beer/are stressed), is extremely powerful.
What's the coolest hypnosis story you've got?
I was invited to speak at a hypnosis conference in Vegas, and noticed Mike Tyson was making an appearance nearby.
I got the chance to meet him, but instead of grabbing a quick autograph, I thrust my hand out, got him to focus deep into my eyes... and started to do what I do!
Next thing I had him roaring in my face, then got him so pumped to the point that he screamed 'You are amazing. You're gonna take over the world."
