Longest-serving firefighter leaves town on new adventure
GLADSTONE'S longest-serving firefighter is leaving town today in pursuit of his next adventure.
Harry Tattersall has witnessed drastic changes over almost 40 years of service.
"Firefighting appliances, how we approach fires - it's all changed pretty dramatically," he said.
"We don't just deal with fires anymore. Confined-space rescues, swift-water rescues, road traumas - we cover a multitude of sins."
After a seven-year stint at QAL, Mr Tattersall knew he needed a career that he would enjoy and one that would pose a constant challenge.
In firefighting, he found his life calling.
But now he and wife Shirley are heading to Longreach this week with caravan in tow. The couple will then travel on to Western Australia .
