Lexus GS F super sedan arrives costing from $148,800
THE new Lexus GS F super sedan has gone on sale in Australia, offering a compelling alternative to the established German high-powered brutes.
The Lexus's biggest point of difference is its naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 powerplant, a more old school and arguably purer way of delivering big power numbers while the likes of BMW and Audi have embraced turbocharging.
Even without forced induction, the GS F offers a wall of power, noise and performance. It generates maximum power of 351kW @ 7100rpm and peak torque of 530Nm @ 4800rpm, hits 100kmh in 4.6-seconds and on to a limited 270kmh.
Two near identical GS F models are offered, the only difference being seat trim levels. The entry-level GS F costs $148,800 and has Alcantara trim with heated seats from and rear, while a second retails for $151,700 and brings premium semi-aniline leather-accented seat trim and the addition of ventilation for front chairs.
Standard features on both include a four-mode drive select system, torque vectoring differential, 19-inch forged alloys, Brembo brakes, LED headlamps, 12.3-inch HD screen, 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio, tri-zone climate, head up display, heated steering wheel, moonroof and power rear sunshade. Safety inclusions are 10 airbags, a pre-collision system, active cruise control and lane keep assist.
Lexus isn't expecting large sales of its new super sedan, but it is a halo model and now the second car from the brand's F division in the past 12 months, following the RC F from last year.
Rivals include the BMW M5 Pure ($185,000), Audi S6 ($169,510), or if you can fancy a ballistic Lexus with just the two doors, sample that RC F ($133,110).
Cheaper super sedan V8 fun can be had for much less coin too - if not quite the luxury - with a Chrysler 300 SRT ($69,000) or HSV ClubSport R8 LSA ($83,490) for example.
Feeling left field? Go a Tesla Model S 90D (from $161,889 drive away): it's larger than the RC F, quicker to 100kmh and yes, a bit more economical. Lexus's GS F has a quoted economy return of 11.3-litres/100km combined.
