LETTER: A cultural musical journey for Ian
AS my musical journey widens now with a violin from Norway, I'm quite puzzled as to how many individuals know their own cultures, traditions and most of all their traditional musical instrument that was played.
Most individuals learn about guitar, violin or piano with recorder or flute as the usual choice of musical instrument.
Have you ever heard of a Hardanger? or Pippa? or Rebab?
Not very common names or a Hasapi from sumatra. It is lovely to know different musical instruments from various countries not just to collect them but to play them with exceptional virtuosity as well.
The celtic harp and the charango are my favorites as well as the others, but ask an individual from that country have you heard of this instrument or seen a picture they are in a standstill.
