Learner waves feature again this weekend locally

LOOKS like a few little learner waves again this weekend.

The beach was back to its beautiful best Friday morning, after a bit of rain and light off-shores.

The wind will remain light most of the weekend - but the mornings will be the best.

Triple Crown started

THE Triple Crown has started in Hawaii with the Reef Pro at Haleiwa followed by the World Cup at Sunset and then the Pipe Masters at - you guessed it - Pipeline.

The boys head into the round of 64 this weekend in pretty solid Haleiwa.

Mason Ho won the trials event, the HIC Pro at Sunset. Mason's dad is Hawaii legend Michael Ho, and his uncle is former world champ Derek Ho.

Word is Mick (Fanning) is doing the Triple Crown, even though the Pipe Masters and the world title is his major focus, to get a bit of practice in four-man heats in Hawaii.

Interesting that reigning world champ Joel Parkinson is not doing the Triple Crown; he has already won it three times.

Word is he is enjoying spending a bit more time at home on the Goldie with his family and friends.

Mick and Kelly (Slater) will fight it out for the world title at the Pipe Masters, just like Joel and Kelly did when I was there last year.

Catching break in Hawaii

SURFING in Hawaii can be a real challenge with breaks like Sunset and Pipe pretty demanding, both on a skill level and physically.

Last year, it was in the middle of the contest season in a Hawaiian winter, when it can get huge, so I surfed with a mate in a few lesser known spots.

Backyard Sunset is just around the corner a bit, and off the main highway, and is really a locals-only place.

Former world champ Barton Lynch has one of the only eight or nine houses right there.

V-land or Velzy-land was pretty good too.
