Kids take to the court as basketball season tips off

BASKETBALL is ready to tip off in Gladstone, with the Junior Winter competition beginning on Thursday.

Kids will be shooting onto the court to join the action. It is good timing as the first fixtures are in the same week as the McDonald's Port City Power hosts Cairns in the Queensland Basketball League.

The juniors though have a few years until they will be aiming for a spot in the senior ranks.

With no experience necessary for players, the teams will be structured to make the competition as closely fought as possible.

"The first few weeks we play and switch teams around until they are balanced," treasurer Angie Wilmot said.

However, this season will be slightly different with coaches trying to group some schools together into teams.

Schools with fewer players will not miss out, being aligned with like players.

The juniors are also likely to be able to brush shoulders with the Power players, who will get involved in their spare time.

"They come down and coach and help the kids with their basketball," Wilmot said. "We are also looking at training camps through the season as well."

The season will cost $145 and $40 for a playing singlet. It starts this week and wraps up at the end of August.
