Unemployment nearly doubles in CQ during past year
THE number of unemployed people in central Queensland has nearly doubled in the past year, with a total of 15,500 people out of work in Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone and Emerald last month.
In 2012, the figure had been just 8000.
Shadow treasurer Curtis Pitt said on Thursday that regional unemployment figures by the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed that the Mackay-Fitzroy Central West region had doubled in unemployment between July 2012 and July 2013.
It comes as the Office of Economic and Statistical Research (OESR) revealed workforce population projections for ongoing construction of the three major LNG plants.
The general findings revealed Gladstone would attract a workforce of 4450 in 2013 and then decline over the years to 2019.
The best case scenario saw the workforce slowly increase from 3,610 workers in 2012 to 3,880 in 2017.
The worst case saw a decrease from 3610 to 570 .
