The raucous twin turbo 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG

TODAY'S blog is on the all-new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG.

This stunning diamond white model features a front-mounted, 5.5 litre, 32 valve twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder engine which can produce up to 395 kilowatts (537 horsepower) at 5250rpm and a whopping 800 Newton metres of torque (590 pound-feet of torque) @ 2000 rpm.

That means this completely re-designed model has nine more kilowatts (12 horsepower) and 169 more Newton metres of torque (125 pound-feet of torque) than the previous version of the SL63 AMG.

Connected to this amazing engine is a seven-speed AMG Speedshift automated-manual transmission, which can shift gears by using the paddles behind the steering wheel. This gearbox then sends all the power to the rear wheels.

This particular model also has a kerb weight of 1845 kilograms, which seems quite heavy for a sports car. Since this car is quite heavy, it surprisingly has hardly any body roll thanks to the AMG Sports Suspension with Active Body Control with two levels of adjustment.

This allows the SL63 AMG to launch from 0-100 kilometres per hour in just 4.2 seconds, and it will keep accelerating until it hits its electronically limited top speed of 250 kilometres per hour (155 miles per hour).

Just like the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale that I featured last week, this SL63 AMG also has different driving modes. These are labelled as C, S, S+ and M buttons in the centre console. They basically do the same thing as the Maserati, too!

C is the "slowest" mode available, which you use in auto. It also has the lowest shifting times, less of a throttle response and is more suited to city driving.

Next is Sport, which has a faster shifting time and also a faster throttle response, and the transmission is still in auto mode. Next is Sport+, which is the fastest and the most technologically advanced out of all of the modes available. It has the fastest shifting time (still using auto mode), and an almost instant throttle response.

The last mode is M, which stands for manual. This has the same characteristics as the Sport+ mode but for shifting you can use the manual shifting paddles behind the wheel.

As you can see in the photos, the SL63 AMG is actually a convertible, but if you fold the roof up (which only takes 16 seconds), it will expose the metallic white hardtop with a panoramic sunroof.
