Jason Hetherington Cup enters 10th year
RUGBY LEAGUE: It will be a jam-packed Marley Brown Oval and surrounding fields on Friday and the weekend.
That's because the 10th Jason Hetherington Cup Under-12 Carnival will be on with 28 teams to participate in the club-based competition.
Carnival founder and co-ordinator Brian Pengelly said it will be a special milestone that will showcase talented junior players.
"I'm sure this carnival will not be any different and it will be as successful as much as the others," he said.
"We've got a lot of games coming ahead and every year everyone gets excited about it because carnival football has been a bonus for a lot of the young kids coming through.
"Carnival football has really taken off right across the state."
Gladstone Wallabys, Gladstone Valleys, Tannum Seagulls, Gladstone Brothers, Calliope Roosters and Biloela - teams which play in the Gladstone Junior Rugby League competition - will all feature in the three-day event.
Games will commence at 9am on Friday and Saturday and 8am on Sunday with finals on later that day.
"They're all to fight off for a trophy at the end of the weekend and we do highlight players of each group and that's actually nominated by the scoring people from each team," Pengelly said.
Gladstone Brothers opens its campaign with a 9.20am clash against Yeppoon Seagulls on Friday at field one, Biloela plays at 10am on field three and Wallabys at 10.20am on field two.
Tannum Seagulls plays its first match at 10.40am on field three, Calliope and Southern Suburbs meet on field one at 11am and Gladstone Valleys also play at 11am on field two.
All other game times can be found on the Jason Hetherington Cup Facebook site.
