Maserati a fast luxury ride

DID you know that the Maserati Biturbo, first introduced in 1981, was the world's first production biturbo engine?

For the pure, unbridled sports car experience, there is only one country to look to: Italy. Ferrari is the Italian marque most recognised around the world, but for the more discerning esperienza Italiana the Maserati brand has it covered.

Doonan's Alex Raymond has owned his 1994 Maserati 430 4v for a number of years now, and has affectionately named it Lola after the famous Kinks song.

“She may look like a beauty, but underneath the bonnet it's all man,” he explained, referencing the 1970 transvestite-inspired hit.

The 2.8-litre V6 with a twin turbocharged set-up is certainly not for the faint-hearted, producing 205kW and dispatching the 0-100kmh sprint in a mere six seconds. Impressive stuff for a four-door luxury car.

Alex has been a lifelong car enthusiast, enjoying the likes of a Triumph Spitfire and Ford Capri V6 in his younger years. He bought the Maserati in 2005 and used it as his daily commuter in Adelaide before moving to the Sunshine Coast.

Italian sport scars and expensive repairs are sadly quite closely associated, so Alex smartly joined the International Maserati Club in the USA, giving him access to a database of about 33,000 new and used parts.

Utilising this resource he's tidied his Australian-delivered 430 4v to a beautiful standard, ensuring it's a striking sight with still-gleaming original paintwork.

The only word to describe the interior is palatial. Incredibly deep and cosseting leather seats combine with a wood and leather dashboard to create a sumptuous cabin, and there's the famous Maserati oval clock to add that touch of old-world charm.

During his ownership of the 430 Alex has bought and sold a Maserati 3200GT and a Ferrari F355 Ferrari once owned by Shane Warne, showing his affection for Italian thoroughbreds. The 430 has remained, however, and his affection for this twin-turbocharged rarity is still very evident.

“I was shocked by its power when I first drove it,” he said. “I was attracted by its looks and very unique style, and the luxury it exudes from the interior. It was ideal for my life in Adelaide where I could commute to work in it each day, or drive into the Adelaide Hills for an enjoyable blast.”

Alex is now seeking a convertible for his new life in Queensland, so the 430 is up for sale. Interested parties should contact Alex on 0407 602 100, with a guide price of $25,900 – a fair whack down on its $140,000 original Australian price.
