Hustlers get the jump on Rollers on home turf
HARBOUR City Hustlers have sent a message to their opponents before Tropicarnage in October with a solid win in their bout with Northern Brisbane Rollers.
The Hustlers took the bout 224-173 at the Gladstone PCYC, a good result on the back of some hard work, both on and off the court.
The team currently has as many derby players as it ever has, meaning a lot of competition just for skaters to get into the bout squad.
"It is definitely the biggest we have had," coach Charlie Keenan said.
"I have 20 girls skating now for 14 spots for a bout so they make my job hard."
As with most of the home bouts in recent times for the Hustlers, a good crowd was at the PCYC for the bout, which included a bout between Mackay and Paradise City before the main Hustlers vs Raw Stars.
Keenan was impressed with the support that Gladstone has shown roller derby.
"It was definitely a success. We would have had 500-600 people, that is what we have been getting," he said.
The win and form that the Hustlers have been showing is down to the hard work on the practice rink, according to the coach. "That is what hard work does, it has paid off," Keenan said.
"They have been working really hard, that showed."
