Hunt on for big catches at The Observer Boyne Tannum HookUp

The Observer Boyne Tannum HookUp schedule

FISH of the region, consider yourselves warned - the hunt is on.

The Observer Boyne Tannum HookUp is officially underway at Bray Park, and for the next three days Australia's keenest fishing folk will be angling to land the big one.

Event spokesman Pat Laws said conditions were perfect for the country's biggest family fishing event.

"It's a bit windy but there's no rain - that will keep people in the rivers probably for the first day," he said.

"But that will really ease off on Saturday and it's going to be beautiful on Sunday!"

While Mr Laws is expecting HookUp's hundreds of contestants to land plenty of big fish over the competition's three days, even empty-handed anglers can still get lucky.

"That's the beauty of it, you don't even have to catch a fish to win a prize!" he said.

There's little chance of bad luck though - with huge rains earlier this year, Mr Laws said waterways are well stocked, and the earlier-than-usual event date would also deliver a bigger range of fish.

He predicted barramundi could be among the biggest catches - but there might be something else bigger.

"We just want a good story to go along with a good catch!" he said.

"We always look forward to a good fishy tail - and we're expecting that big barra will be caught, as well as plenty of big barra lost."

He said another highlight would be the region's youngest fishing enthusiasts.

"It's amazing - some of the fish are nearly the size of the kid that caught them!" he said.

"You look at the smile on these kids' faces, they're just grinning ear to ear."
