High kicks and higher aspirations for sports star Will
BLACK belt Will Mathison is the 2013 Yaralla Sports Star for week six.
Name: Will Mathison
Sport: Taekwon Do
How did you get into the sport?
I heard about Taekwon Do from a friend and liked the idea of learning some self-defence and eventually being able to break some boards with kicking or hand strikes. And it doesn't matter how old you are.
How much time does it consume in your life?
We train twice a week and around grading time instructor Zane offers extra sessions. I have trained regularly since I started Taekwon Do when I was in Yr 1. I am now in Yr 6.
Who do you admire or aspire to be like in your sporting field?
I aspire to be like my instructor, Zane Read. He is a great instructor and athlete.
What's your goal for 2013?
My goal for 2013 is to keep up my training so that I can hopefully soon be an assistant instructor.
What is the most challenging aspect about your sport?
The hardest thing about my sport is that you have to remember all different patterns for every belt and tip which can sometimes contain up to 35 moves. Another challenging thing about Taekwon Do is that you don't just have to be physically strong to break boards and spar but you also have to believe that you can achieve.
What do you enjoy most about it?
That it is challenging because there is always new things to learn and you can always improve.
Who's the best sportsperson you know?
Grand Master John Ivanof
What's been your biggest highlight?
My black belt grading. I had to do all of my patterns, spar with other black belts (some of them were grown men) and break four boards with four different kicks.
