Heron Island home to turtle hatchlings later this year

LATER this year, Heron Island will play host to a unique sight when loggerhead and green sea turtles make their way to shore to nest.

Nesting takes place from September through to March each year.

As September nears, turtles will make their way to Heron Island beaches, miraculously back to the same spot they themselves were hatched some thirty years before, to lay 120 eggs.

Guests can experience the thousands of loggerhead and green sea turtle hatchlings emerging from their shells from November to March.

"Turtle season is a particularly special time on the island, with plenty to enjoy during both the nesting and hatchling phases," Delaware North Companies Australian Parks and Resorts executive director Greg Magi said.

The resort will offer special discounted packages during the turtle hatchling seasons.
