Have your say on marine park plan

JUST days before the public comment period closes for the national marine park plan, the Australian Marine Conservation Society is calling for people to have their say.

The park would create the largest marine area reserved for environmental protection and monitoring, after Environment Minister Tony Burke approved the plan earlier this year.

As part of the approval process, the proposal opens for a public comment period, which officially closes next Monday, September 10.

Coral Sea campaigner Fiona Maxwell said part of the marine park would be the Coral Sea Marine Reserve, which included "more than 340 species of wildlife listed on the global red list of threatened species".

Meanwhile, Queensland Liberal MP Warren Entsch is compiling a petition against the proposal, in defence of recreational fishers who fear the park could impinge on their recreational fishing grounds.

It is understood the petition already has thousands of signatures, while the conservation society is also amassing thousands of signatures.
