Gutsy Tannum surf boat team up fourth place in rough seas

THE Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club contingent of Clayton McDiarmid, Kurt Sherwood, Nic McKeiver and Michael McLean finished fourth in the QLD Navy Series at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast on the weekend.

With Saturday's blustery conditions causing a cancellation of that day's competition, Sunday still consisted of surf at 1.5 metres.

Surf boat sweep and mentor Anthony Davis prepared his 17-year-old Tannum Turbo charges as best he could on Saturday to get them ready for the following day.

"I took the boys to North Kirra for a two-hour session catching waves and to practice in the big surf," Davis said of the team as they prepared for the QLD Navy Series Round Two.

"This helped them I believe as on Sunday the surf was still up and hard for even the experienced surfboat crews.

"The boys rowed well above their experience level, finishing a few of the races with the high experienced crews."

Davis explained that the TSSLSC crew did everything above and beyond the call of duty in a sport that involves communication between the rowers who need to judge how deep they require putting their oars into the water in order to keep the boat as straight as possible.

"Although other clubs were rolling and end for ending their boats in the racing, the Tannum Sands crew did everything I asked them to finish every race straight to the beach and never really got in trouble," Davis said.

"They handled the conditions like they have done it many times, they may tell you they were worried but it didn't show that much."

Davis said other than the competitive nature of the sport; he said that the youngsters made some great friends with their fellow competitors.

"I think they earned some respect in how they raced and competed in the testing conditions, especially from the official's and other coaches," Davis added.

However, Davis did say revenge is planned for the not-too-distant future.

"The experienced crews have the boat speed over us from our first carnival outing, but they won't have it their own way latter in the season," Davis said.
