Grubs stunned by Roos in preliminary final
SOCCER: Frenchville has stunned Clinton FC in the CQ Premier League preliminary final with a come from behind 3-2 victory at Clinton Oval on Saturday night.
Clinton were cruising up 2-0 heading into the final 20 minutes until complacency crept in and Frenchville scored three quick-fire goals within five minutes to leave the Grubs stunned.
The home side were all over the visitors in the early stages and were rewarded with a Matt Varnes goal in the sixth minute and a goal to Dom Barra 10 minutes after half-time.
"They were offering nothing and we were in complete control, but as coaches we weren't really happy with how we were playing - there was no intensity in the match,” Clinton assistant coach Dan Horton said.
"We came back out in the second half and still weren't playing very well but then Barra scored and it went to 2-nil and as a team and coaching staff we were preparing for next week.
"In a game where we didn't have much intensity already we just clicked off for a little bit.”
Reeling from being 3-2 down after being up by two goals only 10 minutes earlier, Clinton threw caution to the wind and piled players forward in an effort to find an equaliser.
However, the ball just wouldn't settle in the back of the net with Clinton hitting the crossbar three times in the same sequence of play late in the contest.
"We lost the plot for 10 minutes and as bitterly disappointed as it is, that's how sport goes - if you don't turn up on the day you pay for it,” Horton said.
The loss means the CQ Premier League grand final won't feature Clinton for the first time since 2008.
Frenchville Roos 3 (Paul Jackson 3) defeated Clinton FC 2 (Matt Varnes, Dom Barra) at Clinton Oval. Half-time: 1-0 Clinton.
