Gladstone port praised for developing long-term strategy

GLADSTONE'S port has been praised by national planners as the only one in Australia to have a long-term strategy.

Infrastructure Australia on Tuesday released its National Infrastructure Plan, which lists major projects for the next 50 years and calls for reforms to Australia's industrial development.

The report said that while a national ports strategy had been released in December 2010, only the Port of Gladstone had a long term plan in place.

"This is a significant national problem," the report said, calling on every major port to develop a 30-year plan.

"These will enable decisions to be made on the expansion of our import and export trade networks, including the future and location of our multi modal terminals, road and rail infrastructure, and promote better relationships between ports and their communities," the report said.
