Gladstone couple win fishing boat worth thousands in hotel raffle

A NIGHT out at the Reef Hotel paid off for a Gladstone couple who won a boat and a trailer to cart it home.

The Reef Hotel has been handing out raffle tickets to patrons for the past four months in a gaming and TAB promotion where the winning couple claimed the "ultimate fishing package", including a Stacer Pro-line boat, safety equipment and the trailer, all worth a total of $8000.

The hotel's venue manager Craig Mylrea said the lucky couple "made the comment that they can't normally win a chook raffle, so they considered themselves to be pretty lucky on the night".

"They haven't won anything like that before," he said.

Mr Mylrea said because the winner had to be at the hotel on the night, he was shocked that the first ticket drawn was the couple.

"It's somewhat unusual but the first name you pulled out is standing in front of you," he said.

He also said it was a bonus the winner were regulars, as "it's always the intended outcome that it's someone who's loyal".

Mr Mylrea said the hotel has never held a competition with a prize of "that style or size" or worth that much.

He said while patrons stopping in on their way through town weren't particularly interested, as they had to be there on the night of the draw, "it certainly generated a lot of interest among locals".
