PHOTOS: Gladstone business' in for most loyal Qlder title

A COMPETITION to remove all doubt over what Goondoon St business is our most loyal Queenslander store closed yesterday, with some clear contenders emerging this morning.

Ahead of tomorrow's Maroon's parade on Goondoon St, business owners have submitted photos of their shopfronts decorated in maroon to GAPDL, who will now decide which store wins a weekend away to Heron Island.

But Cotton Mill Café owner Gary Warburton, whose wife and mother-in-law spent Saturday "prettying up" his café, said "it's more about getting in the spirit" than the prize.

Mr Warburton said it's "a bit hard to gauge" the size of the crowd that will turn up, but "it's certainly going to be a lot busier than your regular Tuesday afternoon".

"It's unprecedented," he said.

Effie Robb, who moved into Goondoon St last month, will miss out on the competition, as her husband is decorating their storefront tomorrow morning, but she's banking on the parade giving her business "exposure".

"We want to attract new clients, so really, just letting people know where we are. So with that many people coming through, they'll see that we're there."

Mrs Robb is a little concerned the crowds expected to flock to the city's centre could face difficulty parking, but "we hope it's well organised".

Allira Gray, of Departure Point, is also in the running to be named Goondoon St's most loyal Queenslander after drowning the store in maroon jerseys, posters, and flags.

"Do I think we are in contention to win? Absolutely," she said.

Ms Gray is also telling crowds that Departure Point will be handing out free maroon merchandise, including beanies, key rings, and DVDs of 1991 to 2005 highlights.
