GALLERY: Toowoomba surge to first win as Power are winless
BASKETBALL: Gladstone Port City Power The Capricornian Surge coach Brady Walmsley is keeping the faith in his new-look team after a 120-90 loss to Toowoomba Mountaineers.
Damon Bozeman played one of the great QBL games as he tore the Power to shreds with 49 points that included a patch of two triples and a three-point play which took the wind out of the host's sails.
At that stage Gladstone closed it to 75-71 on the back of some inspiration from Cirkook "Shak" Riak (17 points) before Bozeman's brilliance.
"It was always going to be a difficult game and both teams were winless," Walmsley said.
Early foul trouble to Riak and Nathaniel Musters did not help Port City Power's cause and as a result Harold Ridgeway (16 points) grabbed six at both ends of the court.
Mountaineers Josh Derkson (13 points) and Manylok Malek (20) dominated inside the paint.
"That team isn't more talented than us necessarily, but they were way better than us and we've shown some really positive signs," Walmsley said.
"We haven't shown that for long enough duration of basketball games to be the team we want to be."
Power's Taylor Young netted 27 points and co -captain Matt Hancock 19 points.
"We were aggressive on defence and we stuck to our defensive philosophy which was great," Mountaineers' coach Danny Morseu said.
