MOTORSPORT: They came from far and wide and it was an "outsider" team that took out this year's Lowmead 3 Car Challenge.

Mackay's six-man team called Clowns of Carnage comprised of Jon Dannatt, his navigator Ryan Boswood, Shanahan Starrett and Scott Ebert (navigator) and John Nicholas with his navigator Dean Kingwon with 1726 points across the 10-stage event.

Second was the Cause For Divorce team on 1656 with Why Not in third (1629 points).

"We had a nice ride with no breakages," Dannatt said.

"We have been doing Lowmead since 2012 and finished in the top three in most of them, but this was our first win."

Dannatt praised the event's organisation.

He said his troops would now prepare for another off-road event in Easter in Mackay.

Lowmead event organiser Anthony Dow said competitors were already looking to the 2019 event to be held on November 8-10.

"Next year's Lowmead 3 Car Challenge will be massive as it's our 10th year of running this event," Dow said.

"We have already had teams telling us they cannot wait as they look forward to this event every year."

The Lowmead 3 Car Challenge raises money for various charities.

"Preparations for next year's event will start in February and we have a meeting in a month to finalise this event and cut cheques to hand out to our charities," Dow said.

"We will wait until the next Rescue Chopper event to give them another $5000; we were down on competitors this year but up on spectators."
