Furnace set to fire up

A FOURTH carbon bake furnace has been commissioned by Boyne Smelters Limited for $337 million.

BSL general manager Guy Fortin said the new CBF4 would have environmental and operational benefits.

"It is very exciting for us to be starting up the new furnace as the technology allows for a smarter, cleaner 'burn' cycle," Mr Fortin said.

The furnace will replace two of BSL's existing three carbon bake furnaces, which produce carbon anodes needed to make aluminium.

Mr Fortin said the development and construction of CBF4 was part of the $700 million Boyne Smelters Development project, which began in 2008.
