Free water tanks allocated to community groups

NINETEEN schools, sports clubs and organisations will benefit from used water tanks set to be handed out by Gladstone Regional Council.

The tanks were given to council by LNG companies when the commissioning of permanent water and sewerage infrastructure on Curtis Island made the storage containers redundant.

Council in April called for expressions of interest from non-profit organisations that could benefit from the use of the tanks.

Engineering Services portfolio spokesman Rick Hansen said 20 submissions had been received for the 20 tanks available, with 19 successful in gaining at least one of the containers, which were available in three sizes.

"To ensure the maximum number of organisations and members of the community benefited from the tanks, council endorsed the expression of interest panel's assessment which recommended that the tanks be spread throughout the group of applicants," Cr Hansen said.

"Given the size of the tanks and the potential issues with transport, the costs of which were not to be borne by council, we're mindful that some community groups may elect not to proceed with the collection of the tanks.

"In such instances, the tanks will be offered to those organisations which requested additional tanks but received just the one."
