Craner keen to keep yacht at pace in Sydney to Hobart

FORMER commodore at the Port Curtis Sailing Club Tony Craner is currently in the rough open water in the Rolex Sydney to Hobart 2015.

Craner is the navigator of Samurai Jack and is in his fourth Sydney to Hobart campaign in which 15 boats were forced to pull out due to rough weather.

"I'm currently working in Saudi Arabia and have flown back to join QCYC boat Samurai Jack for the Hobart race," Craner said on Christmas Day as he was preparing for a rough sail down Bass Straight.

He said the Farr 39 designed boat and the main focus will be to keep the boat going at a steady rate of knots despite some downsides of it.

"It is a quick boat , but wet and little room on board and we will spend most of our time on the rail helping to keep the boat going fast," Craner explained.

Craner is one of four sailors with Gladstone connections with Tom Barker on Victoire, Jonathon Drummond on Ichi Ban and Marty Watson on Midnight Rambler.
