Five year old critical after being stuck down in school zone

A YOUNG boy was in a critical condition on Wednesday night after becoming the second child to be hit in a Sydney school zone this week.

The boy, believed to be aged five, was knocked unconscious after being struck while crossing a road at Blacktown about 3.15pm.

It came two days after a three-year-old was critically injured in a school zone at St Helens.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander John Hartley said police in NSW had issued 4198 infringement notices for drivers breaking the rules in school zones since the start of this year.

Under NSW law, the speed limit is 40kms/h in school zones - most of which operate from 8- 9.30am and from 2.30-4pm Monday to Friday.
