Five-time Olympian hosts paddling clinic at Tannum

MULTIPLE Olympian Clint Robinson will be visiting central Queensland from next Friday, including Tannum Sands Life Saving Club on Saturday week.

Robinson, who competed in five Olympics and was the first gold medallist in the canoe / kayak category at Barcelona Olympics in 1992, will conduct paddling clinics at Yeppoon and Bundaberg as well.

Boyne Tannum residents Luke and Annie Grice will co-host the event, which starts from 1pm at Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club.

"Luke has organised for Clint to come up and, since Luke and Hayden Lester competed in Hawaii recently, I think that Luke and Hayden have inspired more people to take up ocean ski paddling as a sport,” Annie said.

The sessions include a Malibu board clinic between 1pm and 3pm followed by a ski clinic from 4pm to 6pm.

Robinson will also present video footage that will highlight quality technique that can be put into practice on the water.

Unless the weather gets rough, which is unlikely at this time of year, the sessions will be held at Tannum Sands beach.

"If the water is too rough for the level of paddlers they will be doing the ski-paddling session in the river,” Annie said.

The geographical location of the Tannum Sands region and central Queensland made for a perfect setting for major competitions, Annie said.

"We have perfect weather all year round for ski paddling and a great flat-water venue at Lake Awoonga, as well as our beautiful beaches and ocean for training and racing,” she said.

"I know Luke would love to host a major paddling event here and having Clint up here doing the clinics will be great for them both to look at the overall ocean and ski-paddling development for the central coast region.”

Robinson's reputation began to grow in the late 1980s when he won the cadet malibu board race at the 1987 National Surf Life Saving Championships.

In 1988 Robinson was invited to train with the Australian Olympic kayak squad.
