Fillies and Families on the picnic menu at annual race meet
THE COUNTRY winter racing carnival comes to a head next Saturday, with the Families and Fillies race day.
A joint effort between Roma Turf Club and Roma State College, this year's theme is picnic.
All the money raised goes back into the senior campus' multi purpose outdoor learning area.
RSC P&C president Diana Garvie said this year would see an increase in the prize money.
"This is the Roma Turf Club's second TAB meeting allocation for the year, and the Race to Roma final will see an increase in prize money this year to $30,000,” she said. "This takes the six-race TAB program to a series worth $123,000 in prizemoney.
"The Fillies and Families day is a great afternoon for the kids with face painting, jumping castle, giant inflatable slide, giant sand pit, and watching the horses gallop around the track.”
The school race day started in 2015, and for the first time this year hampers will be on offer.
"A hamper for two is $60, which includes two free drink tickets,” Ms Garvie said.
"The idea is for guests to bring their picnic blankets and sit around the beautiful grounds of Bassett park.
"It is a wonderful casual day with families as the focus.” Make sure you book your hamper before Sunday. Gates open at noon next Saturday, July 27.
