Call to arms for spectators to support depleted parade

FESTIVAL organisers have issued a call to arms for Friday's parade down Gladstone's main street.

With float numbers down drastically after rain washed out Sunday's Gladstone Harbour Festival Parade, organisers are keen to get as many spectators as possible to line Goondoon Street.

A total of 41 floats were initially taking part in the parade but now there will only be 11 participating.

However, Gladstone Festival and Events Event Coordinator Abi Galbraith said she still hoped a huge crowd of spectators would help fire up the event.

"With the last minute rescheduling of the event and in the interest of keeping everything manageable we won't be accepting any new entrants for the parade, however we'd love as many spectators as possible to get involved," she said.

The parade will leave from O'Connell Wharf on Flinders Parade at 4pm. It will then travel over the Marina Bridge, down Bryan Jordan Drive and finish at the Mission to Seafarers building.

Some interesting floats will be on display, with Muffin Break one of the participants putting lots of effort into their entourage.

Franchisee Manager of Muffin Break Gladstone Ankia Kriel said her team was thrilled to be a part of the annual event.

"It's our first year and we are extremely happy it's happening this year," she said.

The Muffin Man will be standing on the back of a trailer, handing out mini muffin packs to children at the parade.

But the muffin man's suit nearly didn't make it to Gladstone this week.

"The Muffin Man's suit is from Sydney and it nearly went missing in the post - lucky it came in time!" Ankia said.

The highly anticipated NRG Great Raft Race will go ahead at full steam on Friday from 10.30am at the boat ramp in front of the Gladstone Yacht Club.

An array of rafts will line the water with designs such as fire trucks, bumble bees, catamarans and even a Great Gatsby-inspired raft.

There's plenty of prizes up for grabs, including one for the team that sinks first, best dressed and more.
