Federer sets up showdown with No.10 seed
SEVENTEEN-time grand slam winner Roger Federer is through to the next round of the Australian Open after a tough 7-5 6-3 7-6 (7-5) win over American Noah Rubin.
The Swiss former world No.1 will now face Tomas Berdych in the third round.
The Czech 10th seed had a straight-sets win over American Ryan Harrison.
Federer's win was more difficult than the straight-sets scoreline suggested.
The four-time Melbourne Park champion was forced to save two set points in the third after the world No.200 Rubin broke his serve early, before Federer broke back with the score at 5-4. He then sealed the result in the tiebreak.
"He had the upper hand from the baseline, I think my serving kept me in the match,” Federer said after the game.
