Gem club celebrates anniversary with exhibition launch
GLADSTONE District Gem, Rock and Minerals Club celebrated its 50 year anniversary at the weekend.
A group of gem cutters and enthusiasts gathered at the club's showground premises on Saturday.
The group then made its way to Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum, where an exhibition celebrating the 50 year anniversary was opened.
Member for Gladstone Liz Cunningham launched the exhibition, titled 50 Years of Gems.
"It takes a lot of effort to maintain a club operating that long," she said.
"I hope the next 50years are just as successful."
Ms Cunningham said working with gems can be a valuable hobby.
"It's one of those hobbies that branches out into the commercial (realm)," she said.
"It's suitable for everybody in the family - I think the youngest is about nine.
"The Gem Club has polishers, cutters (and) silversmiths.
"It's just a wonderful club that caters for the broadest range of people including all the families.".
The 50 Years of Gems exhibition runs until Saturday, June 14.
