Escaped circus camel leads police on merry chase

DARWIN drivers were forced to avoid a runaway circus camel on Monday afternoon before police recaptured the adventurous animal on a golf course.

The camel escaped from Circus Royale on Bagot Rd - one of Darwin's busiest roads - and led police on a merry chase before it was caught on the ninth green of RAAF Darwin Golf Club and returned to the circus.

Acting Senior Sergeants Drew Slape said camel wrangling wasn't a normal activity for Territory officers.

"It appears the fine men and women of the NT Police also have hidden talents in camel wrangling after they quickly tracked it down, secured it and handed it back over to circus personnel," he said.

"And it wasn't even hump day."
