Energetic sport a new adventure for young sports star
NATHAN Taylor has tried a lot of sports over his short lifetime, but has now found his calling card in a sport away from the mainstream.
Adventurethon has taken its grip on the 14-year-old, who has already begun training for another attempt after winning a bronze medal in his first try at Magnetic Island on March 30.
"It was fun, tiring and exciting," Nathan said about his first try.
A sport which encompasses running, kayaking and mountain biking, there is reason for even an energetic young body to tire.
In fact, Nathan had to do a 2.4km run, something he admits to not doing often, kayak 500m - something he had never done before - and mountain bike 10km, which was his strength.
After all of the tasks, Nathan was able to finish third in the 13-17 age group, against much older and more experienced competitors.
"For my first time, it was a bit scary but exciting," he said. "My stepdad offered me to go and I thought I could do it so I went."
Success now behind him, Nathan is keen to see the next event at Townsville on June 20.
With a second-hand kayak to help him train for the discipline, Nathan has his sights even higher next time out.
A change of school may even help him with more time to train, and he's also interested in getting a job and learning more about bikes.
"I would like to keep going; my goal would be to be sponsored or own my own bike shop in the future," he said.
