Looking back: How Boyne Tannum HookUp began
IN 1994 the Boyne/Tannum Chamber of Commerce, along with several business people, realised the region was lacking something.
There seemed to be very little happening throughout the year to keep the locals interested in staying here for their holidays.
The many grey nomads who migrated from the southern states each year bypassed our region for the well-advertised destinations in the north, and that meant many thousands of dollars not being spent locally.
So, in 1995, to fill this gap, The Boyne Tannum HookUp was born with some 315 entrants and $12,000 in cash and prizes.
By 2010, the number of entrants had reached 4000, consisting of 3000 adults and 1000 children, with a prize pool of $250,000.
It was, and is still, recognised as the premier fishing event in Australia.
The original vision for this event was to bring visitors to our great region and share what we believe to be a slice of heaven.
Along the way, we realised we had the opportunity to not only support commerce but to put vital funds into sporting groups and charities.
The event required the expertise of someone to take it to the next level.
After discussions with Rio Tinto, a decision was made to create a partnership where they would provide consultants to review the performance, help develop a framework and strategic planning, review risk management and undertake marketing.
It was recognised that a professional approach was needed.
This would also include financial planning, community communication, professional grant application strategies and future project planning.
What does this mean to us? Sustainability for the event, more people to visit our region spending money and all those things that go with tourism.
Along with tourism comes growth, and with growth comes commerce.
Through a common passion of wanting to help our community, I hope this partnership will continue to grow for years to come, therefore helping our community to flourish and be the envy of all other regions of Queensland.
This year, the HookUp runs on the Queen's Birthday long weekend (June 5-7).
The Boyne Tannum HookUp committee this year is Jeff Amos, Ned Beaumont, Russ Tomlinson, Bernadette Knight, Rebecca Dick, Pat Laws, Kris Beaumont and Annette Tomlinson.
