Drag racers ready for championship's first round of action

GLENN Williams enjoys charging his cars down the drag strip, chasing that fast feeling of flying at full speed.

But with two cars to pick from, Williams is feeling totally frustrated, sidelined by broken parts.

"I have a street registered Volkswagen Beetle and a front engine dragster," Williams said.

While he will miss the first round of the Central Queensland Drag Racing Association Championship, this has not dampened his enthusiasm for the event.

In his first year as president of the association, Williams is keen to see as many people as possible back at the track.

And after a couple of months away themselves, the drivers are just as keen for action.

"We sure are ready. The first round is great," he said.

"I will race again when I get the chance, but this weekend I just keep an eye on operations as the day goes on."

Looking forward to his first year in charge, Williams is particularly keen for the Aeroflow Nationals in October.

But for now, getting through this weekend is the only thing on Williams' mind, with drivers coming from Mackay, Bundaberg, Townsville and Brisbane.
