Not enough work to go around as job market takes downturn
GLADSTONE'S booming jobs market has taken a turn for the worse - and a local recruitment consultant says there's not enough work to go around.
Katie Smith, recruitment consultant at Drake International Gladstone, says the market is flooded with jobseekers in all industries.
And Gladstone might no longer be the region of opportunity, despite its many resources projects.
"I explain to people they're like different countries (Gladstone and Curtis Island)," she said.
"The town isn't really affected by the bigger projects that go around town.
"A lot of people come to Gladstone a bit disillusioned with information that is incorrect.
"A lot of guys with all these tickets ask, 'How come I can't find a job?'" Ms Smith said.
"It's because they need to be ticketed in niche areas. If you want to find an excavator job, there's thousands of them (people qualified)."
New Australian Bureau of Statistics figures from the 2011 census show 20.6% of Gladstone's workforce are trade workers or technicians, followed closely by labourers at 16.7%.
Chandler Macleod Group Gladstone branch manager Claire Maslen said their most regularly recruited roles were labourers, operators, drivers HR/MR, stores and administration.
"The easier roles to fill are labourers and administration," she said.
"Roles harder to fill are data technicians, auto electricians and electricians, sales reps and business development managers."
However, News Ltd reports today that Bechtel is looking for about 500 more workers on Curtis Island as work accelerates on LNG projects.
Bechtel general manager Kevin Berg said the company was looking to hire hundreds of special class welders and was also recruiting heavily for instrument technicians, fitters, electricians and riggers.
Bechtel's website currently lists 103 jobs in Australia, including 11 in Gladstone.
