Divisions debate back on the table at council chambers

THE Gladstone Regional Council will start to investigate whether divisions would be possible following public debate on the issue.

With debate raging in council chambers on Tuesday, Cr Ren Lanzon moved that the debate on divisions be held in the council chambers at "some time in the near future".

Mayor Sellers said before any official debate on divisions was to take place, CEO Stuart Randle should prepare a report into the logistics of divisions, with questions raised over how much representation rural divisions would actually be afforded.

Deputy mayor Matt Burnett was strident in his view that divisions would not achieve better rural representation than the current model.

"The law states that a division will be made on population of not less than 10% for each division," Cr Burnett said.

"So for some people to suggest that there would be a councillor in Mount Larcom, and one in Boyne Valley and one in the city is absolutely ridiculous."
