Today in history: Fire razes jewellery shop, dental surgery
ON THIS day (December 24) in Gladstone history:
Shortly before 3 o'clock this morning fire destroyed two shops in Goondoon St, occupied by William Thompson, who is conducting a stationery, jewellery and tobacconist's business, and Mr William Byrne, dental surgeon. The fire was noticed by Mr Thompson who resides about 70 yards from the building and who gave the alarm. The building, which was owned by Mr EP Colyer, was destroyed.
The Parish Hall presented a most picturesque appearance on Friday night on the occasion of the St Saviour's Church of England Kindergarten Christmas tree. The hall was illuminated by numerous coloured lights and had been nicely decorated, the theme of the decorations being bluebirds on white backgrounds, within a circlet of greenery.
