Curtains will finally rise on Gladstone centre in October

IT'S been delayed a few times and the planned grand opening had to be cancelled, but the council is anticipating the Gladstone Entertainment Convention Centre is on track to open in October.

And centre manager Troy Everett is taking no chances with being caught out again on promises.

"(The grand opening) will be after a period of time that is still yet to be decided by council," he said, mysteriously.

Rain has been a major factor in the centre's delay, and work halted for a period on Wednesday as the wind was too strong to work with the crane on the building.

"We still are prone to weather," Mr Everett said.

"We're still waiting for the roof to go on part of the centre.

"Supply of materials, that could be another delay.

"The closer we get, the less likely we are to have delays."

For the time being, productions booked for late October and November will take place at the Marina Marquee.

"(It will stay there) until we are completely relocated back," Mr Everett said.

"Then the marquee will move back up to its original home which is beside the entertainment centre, to be used as an extra venue."

The Variety Ball on October 26 is tipped to be the first event held in the new auditorium.

"(The centre is) on schedule, for handover in mid-October," Mr Everett said.

"And everything at this point of time is going as planned.

"It will take us a couple of weeks to do final fit outs and testing before we hold our first event."

Anticipated November events to be held at the centre include a show by comedian Kitty Flanagan on November 15 and on November 16, Harbour City Havoc 2 will deliver heavyweight boxing title fights.
