Boxing coach delighted to win Yaralla sports award
MICK Daly has been the assistant coach for the Australian Olympic boxing team twice and coached many an aspiring boxer in his 15 years since opening Gladstone Amateur Boxing.
Recently, Daly's dedication to the sport of boxing was recognised when he was presented with the Yaralla Sports Star Club person of the Year award.
Although he was out of town and could not collect the award, Daly said he was stoked to hear about his win via Facebook the next day.
"It is always good to get rewarded for all the work you put in," Daly said.
And he does put some hard work in.
Daly said it wasn't just about the hours spent coaching the kids but everything that went into running the gym including fundraising so the kids could compete away to making sure the gym was clean.
"You do a bit of everything.
"It's what we do for the kids in town."
Daly's ambition is to coach the Olympic team a third time when they head to Rio and continue to coach at the gym. "It is something I still enjoy doing," he said.
