Club gets grants of approvals with new equipment

ATHLETICS: It's been a big week for Gladstone Athletics Club.

And despite the big wet washing away the year's final meet on Saturday, athletes will enjoy new apparatus in the new year when competition resumes on January 19.

Club president Shane Gibson said 50 new hurdles was just the start of an upgrade to equipment.

"Coles are our big sponsor and there are other grants to help clubs along," Gibson said.

"We applied for the grant and our old hurdles have been replaced with Little Athletics Queensland standard brand new ones."

Gibson said the hurdles would lift the club's rating further and certain to attract more athletes to the club.

"We have had 155 kids registered this year and up from about 120 kids in 2017," he said.

"It's been a whirlwind period and with a major sponsor Pirtek Australia coming on board on a six-year contract."

Gibson said it would take about a year to raise $4500 - the cost of the new hurdles - which the grant covered.

The club has applied for a government grant as well.

"We have ordered high-jump mats and more training gear and other various items such as a line marker," Gibson said.

The club has also ordered a marquee and two laptop computers and Gibson said his wife Jo, the club secretary, has worked feverishly to secure the grants.

It sets up an exciting 2019.

"It's all about making things right for the kids to enjoy from tiny tots to up to under-17," Gibson said.

It's not only youngsters who will enjoy the new, but adults as well and Gibson said there will be events hosted for adults registered in Queensland Athletics.

"We have also invited all clubs from around the district for a multi-event here on February 10," he said.

"There will be four events for the U6-U8 and nine events for those who are aged nine years and above."
