Clinton FC prepared for Frenchville showdown

SOCCER: Clinton FC are raring to go ahead of this weekend's clash with rivals Frenchville after an impressive 5-0 win away from home against the Nerimbera Magpies in Round 12 of the CQ Premier League.

After a disappointing loss to Cap Coast in Round 11, their first loss at home since 2012, assistant coach Dan Horton said the team worked hard in training last week so they could put in a good performance against Magpies.

Clinton had five individual goalscorers against the Magpies, with 16-year-old Liam Stephen opening the scoring in the 12th minute.

The victory against the lowly Magpies was made even more eye-catching considering the side was missing prolific striker Dominic Barra, who was missing due to work commitments.

"We've had a good preparation for Frenchville,” Horton said.

"It's probably the biggest game of year so far and both teams would have improved a lot from the FFA Cup match.

"We haven't beaten them at their ground in a long time but I don't think it will be a real advantage because both teams lift for each other and form goes out the window.”

Clinton defeated Frenchville 2-0 in the fourth preliminary round of the FFA Cup in April before going down 2-1 against Cap Coast in the following round.

Clinton currently sit in fourth place on the ladder with 15 points, four points behind Frenchville but with two games in hand.

The two sides will meet twice over the next three rounds, although Clinton will have to get the job done without key midfielder and captain Chris Hill, who is away for the next four weeks due to personal commitments.

"It's a blow but we have players that can come in and do a job,” Horton said.

"He's probably the in-form centre midfielder of the competition.

"He runs the middle and is so big and strong, we should be right without him though.”

Horton expects Barra, who has four goals in as many games, to return for Saturday's 7pm clash at Rockhampton's Ryan Park, while Jay Wernerson will also come into consideration after recovering from a foot injury.
