Clinic denies visits are costly despite not bulk-billing
GLADSTONE GP Super Clinic has denied claims that some patients had to pay up to $80 for a doctor's appointment at the weekend.
The allegations surfaced on popular Gladstone social media page Gladstone Feedback Group on Sunday.
Practice director Dr John Bird said the centre did not bulk-bill on weekends because it had to cater for staff costs, but said a big bill was unlikely.
A standard GP appointment costs $26 at the Gladstone Super Clinic and offers a $13 discounted rate.
Dr Bird said bulk-billing was at the discretion of the doctors and depended on the patient and their condition.
"Bulk-billing does not attract staff to work on the weekend," he said.
Pathology, chronic disease management services and most radiology services at the Super Clinic are bulk-billed. The GP Super Clinic is open on Saturday and Sunday between 9am and 5pm.
Across town BITS Medical Centre in Boyne Island provides bulk-billing for all GP appointments for those with Medicare cards.
"We are fully booked on Saturdays, but we can hold appointments if needed," a BITS spokesman said.
BITS Medical Centre is open between 9am and 11am on Saturdays.
