Car sale scam fraudster ordered to repay more than $11,000

AN EBBW VALE fraudster who pocketed thousands of dollars from a car sale scam has been ordered to repay more than $11,000.

At Ipswich Magistrates Court this week, Tanya Croft pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess said the 45-year-old had falsely advertised cars for sale online, via the small ads site, Gumtree.

Croft made two prospective buyers each pay her $2000 as a holding deposit but failed to refund the money when she didn't deliver the cars.

The fraud offences took place in January and May this year.

Ms Sturgess noted Croft had earlier faced court on August 26 to plead guilty to five other fraud offences, for the same type of scam.

For those offences, the court ordered Croft pay $7645 in restitution to the victims.

"You obtained a significant amount of money," Ms Sturgess told Croft.

In sentencing, Ms Sturgess said she had to take into account the totality principle.

"It's means I have to consider where these offences fit in with the other five fraud offences you were convicted of," she said.

Croft was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for 12 months.

She was also ordered to pay a further restitution of $4000 to the people she scammed.
