OUR SAY: Cane fires signal rural strength

TO ME there doesn't get much more Australian, or Queensland for that matter, than a cane fire.

I must confess I love them and have been waiting all year to see my first one for the season.

Being new to Bundaberg it was special moment the first time I saw a farmer light up the cane paddock.

It's something most locals probably take for granted.

I know some people get upset about the ash and smoke falling around their home but its something that makes this region special and signals the cane crush is underway. Cassandra Kirk's front page photo today is a cracker, one I wish I took.

"I don't think it will ever get old," she said.

"It's a pretty beautiful sight but pretty rare these days."

I like to thank her for letting the paper use the image. It's uniquely us and good reminder of what keeps the region ticking.

Agriculture is our lifeblood.
