Calliope league juniors look to 2019

RUGBY LEAGUE: Calliope Roosters Rugby League Club will have a strong focus on encouraging more players in the 15-17 age category to join the club next season.

The under-17 Roosters team will play this Friday at 7.50pm at Briffney Junior Fields in its final game of the Gladstone Rugby League Junior competition.

The young Roosters side has done it tough this season and after a bright start where it won its first two games, injuries and player availability became an issue.

"It's been a bit of a battle and they bust their guts every week," U17 Calliope Roosters manager Gavin Crozier said.

"Our boys have turned up every week with anywhere from nine to 13 players.

"We never have any subs and they have had broken collarbones, wrists, fingers and still keep coming back each week."

Crozier said Calliope Roosters is a great club and encourages teenagers in the high-school age to join the club.

"We have a core group of players who have played together since the U9 or U10 level," he said.

"Maybe once a high school will be built in Calliope, we will get more players in the 15-17 age group."
